The Art of Gorgeous Tablescapes & More with Pooja Arya
1. How did you get started with these gorgeous tablescapes ? We are really intrigued
I have always deemed well laid tables very endearing. Though not quite elaborate as my recent tablescapes , I’ve always dressed up tables whenever we entertained. During the lockdown last year, when people all over were struggling to create their own islands of hope and happiness, I channelised the ennui into preening the table , albeit for the three of us. What started as a distraction soon turned into monomania solely because of the joy it dispenses.
2. What is your inspiration behind each or how do you ideate them ? Any funny story or memorable tablescape you’d like to share with us ?
My tablescape ritual involves carrying the dinner plate along with me all over the house, trying to elicit a creative brainwave . Sometimes the curios in a pretty corner beckon and demand a place on the table. Oftentimes I try and matchmake completely offbeat napkins with the flatware and build the theme around it . When i am particularly lazy , then its just a bunch of flowers to appease the tabletop styling gods. The sight of me walking around the house holding out a plate is quite comical . Once when a friend was curious about the table scene on that particular day, I told her its the steel thali unceremoniously dumped on the table kind of a day. And just the next day ,there I was , dressing up the humble thalis with whatever I could scavenge from the backyard. Because , why not ?
3. We see you have a lovely collection of décor pieces, sourced and collected over the years. When do you think you started collecting these ?
Just about 15 odd years . The better pieces are the antiques that were passed down to us.
As opposed to wanting and fatuously buying things that set off my style sensibilities, I now enkindle a space for them at home . But I remain an unresolved impulsive shopper.
4. Show us your favourite corner of your home
This wall in the makeshift tv room would have to be my favourite as it is our portkey to the past, it is the family enterprise of creating memories together. Its a work in progress, always evolving, everchanging , constantly busy , quite quirky , a bit discombobulated unlike the rest of the home which is rather archetypal and unheretical.
Another favourite would be my work desk where I segment my thoughts, create when I feel like or just catch up on my reading. I have everything i need within an arm’s reach. This is my chaos , my tinderbox of which I am the undisputed mistress.
5. We noticed your love for books, would you like to recommend your favourites ?
I read to experience the magic of the composition while I ride on the wings of the words. I won’t claim to be a whip smart reader with a propensity for classics or such. They being a part of the school syllabus made me forsake them altogether. I am more of a patsy for happy endings . Although I prefer thrillers as easy everyday reads, the tales that have stayed with me are The time traveler’s wife, Chocolat, Brida , A thousand splendid Suns , The light between oceans , Keeping Faith, The magic strings of Frankie Presto . Not the one to carry a quote on my sleeve , this one firmly solicits an audience :
“ All humans are musical .
Why else would the Lord give you a beating heart?”
We hope you got inspired to dress up your own tables, we certainly are.
